In a small Texas town, a polite mortal befriends a wealthy widow, but when she starts controlling him, he finds it difficult to break free from her grip. Turns out this 2012 film was a brilliant job by director-screenwriter Richard Linklater, as the real-life Bernie Tiede is a comically ambiguous figure, not just sexually, but more importantly, sexually, as a fun-loving man-child loved by his small-town Texas town of Carthage while strangely insisting on his constant presence in their lives. His strong need for universal approval and unconditional love makes Bernie a standout on-screen actor. It takes a strangely awkward black role on screen to make the character a complex protagonist and, in turn, give him some of his most successful screen work to date. A Texas-caliber eerie gag mixed with grim observations on human nature, the versatile Linklater (Before Sunrise/Sunset) tells this hard-to-believe true crime story with morbid humor and surprising conviction. in 1998 A seriously funny Texas Monthly article featuring one-liner Skip Hollandsworth. The plot centers on the unlikely relationship between Bernie, a relentlessly headstrong assistant undertaker, and Marjorie Nugent, one of Carthage’s wealthiest women, who is recently widowed. While Bernie becomes an irreplaceable part of the community through his charitable acts of kindness, his Broadway-style choral solos, and his gentlemanly way of comforting grieving widows, the perpetually scowling Marjorie is always ready to fight no. Only the townspeople prevent her from living, but even those closest to her can’t stand her. But Bernie manages to overcome the icy facade with her cheerful persistence, and their relationship develops into an unhealthy codependency, to say the least. As Marjorie showers Bernie with expensive gifts and lavish vacations, she becomes increasingly manipulative, feeling the need to control his every move to fulfill her every need. Of course, even Bernie has his limits on what he wants to do under her iron fist. , Consequences arise. Despite all the dire consequences, Linklater sets the mood with intertitles showing what topic will be discussed next and short interviews with actors and real residents of Carthage expressing their unconditional support for Bernie.
