Nine noble families fight for control of the land of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after millennia. Martin’s wife once said that if he killed Arya or Sansa, she would leave him. What’s the consensus?
Main Title (uncredited) written and performed by Ramin Djawadi. Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t seen GoT yet, but are considering the marathon now that it’s over. In this case, the consensus is correct, which is: Seasons 1-6: excellent. Deep world-building, intelligent dialogue, epic set pieces worthy of Hollywood, professional acting, detailed plotting, genuine surprises, great soundtrack used sparingly. GoT is definitely worth watching during these seasons.
There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soap opera drama
Season 7: Suddenly you realize that the writing and plot quality has dropped significantly. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it gets a pass. Season 8: This drop leads to depths you didn’t think possible. The writing has become so amateurish that the still-fantastic production values aren’t enough to save it. If you’ve enjoyed Lost before but were amazed at how bad the last season was, then you’re on familiar ground here.
Fatal for the fiction
The biggest problem with the last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. We lose our suspension of disbelief. It also ruined the series arcs to the point that rewatching the entire series no longer makes sense. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies? Yes, the first six seasons are worth the later disappointments.
But it is not the best series of all time
It could have been, but dropping the ball in the home stretch puts you behind the following superior series that are more worthy of your marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003–2008), Twin Peaks (all three seasons, plus the movie), Breaking Bad
